Bisibelabath/Sambar Rice/Sambar Sadam

Bisibela Bath or Sambar Sadam or Sambar Annam is a one of the traditional breakfast Recipes in Karnataka, South India. It is very similar to sambar recipe which we prepare with only dal. Here we Prepare the dish with toor dal and rice. The dish can be prepared with different methods like some people cook rice and dal separately and some people cook sambar and rice together. Here is my method of preparing Bisibella Bath.

 Ingredients to pressure cook:
  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Turmeric – ½ tsp.
  • Chilli powder – ½ tbsp.
  • Sambar powder – 1 tbsp or you can make sambar powder instantly(see below)
  • Green chillies – 4 (sliced long)
  • Onions – 2 (sliced)
  • Cashew nuts – few (optional)
  • Water
  • Tamarind paste – 1 tbsp
  • Cilantro leaves  – few (chopped)

Vegetables:

  • Drum stick pieces – 5
  • Bottle guard pieces – 5
  • Okra pieces – 5
  • Radish pieces – 4
  • Egg Plant pieces – 4
  • carrot pieces – 5
  • Peas – few
  • Beans(cut)- 4
  • Potato pieces – 4
  • Tomatoes chopped – 3

Ingredients to make sambar powder:

  • Chana dal – 2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – ½ tsp
  • Red chillies – 8 (the one I have is very spicy so I add little) or acc to taste
  • Cinnamon – 1 one inch piece
  • Cloves – 2
  • Coconut – 3 to 4 tsp

Ingredients for Tempering/Tadka/Talimpu

  • Garlic crushed – 2
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tbsp.
  • Few curry leaves
  • Ghee/oil – 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Fenugreek – 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida/hing – 1/4 tsp is optional
  • Red chilli – 1

How to Prepare Bisibelabath/Sambar Rice/Sambar Sadam

  1. Wash and Soak dal for one hour and rice for half an hour.
  2. Dry roast the ingredients under Sambar powder ingredients one after another and make them into powder.
  3. You can make the powder in more quantity and store in an airtight container.
  4. Wash and pressure cook the rice and dal by adding 3 cups of water until you get 2 whistles and leave it aside.
  5. While cooking the rice and dal, prepare Tadka/Talimpu with the ingredients under tempering:
  6. Heat ghee/oil in a pan add mustard and cumin seeds.
  7. When they crackle add the other ingredients under tempering – Garlic, fenugreek, hing(except curry leaves)
  8. Sauté and add onion slices, green chillies, cashews and curry leaves.

  9. Sauté them for 5 minutes and then add cut vegetables. (I forgot to add peas when taking this picture 🙂

  10. Fry them for few minutes and then cook the vegetables by placing a lid on it until they become half  cooked.
  11. Add a cup of water and cook until it gets 3/4 cooked.
  12. Then add tamarind paste, sambar powder, salt, chilli powder and mix well.
  13. Cook this for a while and transfer the steamed rice and dal into it and cook by placing a lid on it.
  14. You can prepare and tadka now instead of making tadka at 5,6,7 steps earlier.

  15. Serve this Bisibelabath/Sambar Rice/Sambar Sadam as hot with Papads, chips or any side dishes( Fry Curries)
